Saturday, February 29, 2020

It's Saturday, so Bikram is at 8:30 today instead of 7:30.  I woke up shortly before the alarm went off a 7.  Elsa and I went for our walk.  I took large, vigorous steps up the hill.  We made it back in record time.

While I was drinking my morning two cups of water and downing some pretzels (breakfast), I went to download the day's entry onto the blog. I looked for February 29th, 2019 and couldn't find an entry.  I panicked for a moment. What could I have done with it?  Why wasn't it there?  Oh, there was no February 29th last year.  Should I post March 1st today, or should I wait until tomorrow?  I decided to skip the day.

When I arrived at the yoga studio, the room was already packed. There was no room in the back row, where I usually work.  It doesn't make any difference to me where I am in the room; I'm lying down for the whole class anyway.  My only concern was, would I be a distraction for the other students.  When I'm in the back, I feel inconspicuous.  Heather said, no worries.  I was also concerned  I would have more of a problem getting up in the middle of the room if I had to go to the bathroom during the class.  I usually use the wall and the ballet barre to help me up when I'm in the back.   Heather told me not to worry; she'd get me up off the floor.

I had to make serious modifications after the first separate leg standing posture. My leg had had it.  I only moved my arms in the triangle pose.  Much to my surprise, I got a new stretch along the left side of my body.  After class, Heather did a few minutes in private with me. It was time to work on the eagle pose.  Heather said she thought mine was excellent.  She had no thoughts about it.  I moved on to the separate leg, standing head to knee.  I demonstrated how I had to roll way over on my left side to engage the left leg in a 'standing' position.  I modeled it several times. Then there was a change. I didn't have to roll over as far, and I got more of a stretch on the left side of my body and my left thigh.  A year ago, I couldn't straighten my left leg completely while lying down. I have made great strides.

Heather recommended several moves to open my hips. Just the thought of making some of those moves sends me into a panic. She asked if the PT worked on bending my left leg at the hip. I told her not unless she wants to hear me scream in pain.  I don't think Heather has completely understood my limitations. That's good and bad.  Bad because until she understands it, she can't recommend moves I can make to help with the problem. Good because it suggests that I look a lot better than I really am.

I had some chores to do after yoga.  The first stop was at Island Naturals. No, they did not have the raw pumpkin seeds in. Those are my favorite; it seems I'm not the only one.  I left for the Wholesale Fabric Discount store.  This is a good-sized store that looks like it hasn't been updated since the early 50s.  As I was driving up there, I thought, "Good forbid, they should ever have to move." There is so much stuff in there,  and a lot of it is small things.

Before I left the house this morning, I ran the washing machine with the linens I had soaked in Clorox yesterday.  Now they were ready to be checked to see if the stains resulting from resting in a closest for the last ten years were gone.  I spent the morning ironing what was stain-free and ran another load with the linens with remaining stains in a pure Clorox wash.

Once I had finished ironing the linens from the first load, I got some items out of the basket in my bedroom that had been sitting there forever.  I hadn't been able to get to the ironing board for a variety of reasons. First off, it was heavy and awkward.  Mike had to get it out for me.  Now Mike was gone. Second, the futon was open, blocking my access to the side of the closet where the ironing board was, and it is too heavy for me to close it.  Finally, the kids staying with me had moved into that room, and it was an obstacle course with all they had in there.

The ironing board was accessible after Damon, Cylin, and August left.  Damon and Cylin helped me clear out the closet.  It was mostly Christmas stuff.  Damon is planning to visit over Christmas and wanted to keep some of the paraphernalia.  I think he got rid of more than he expected.  August slept in the futon during their visit; when he left, the futon got closed up. That means I could reach that side of the closet. Now I was in ironing mode, I decided to attack that basket in my bedroom.

I pulled out two items. One was a dress of mine, and the second was a long-sleeved shirt of Mike's.  Oh, boy.  He must have worn this shirt before he got sick when he went to San Francisco for the spiritual direction course.  It was waiting there for me to iron it so he could wear it again.  I pressed the shirt to my face. I would love to iron more of his shirts.

A few hours later, I dug deeper into the laundry bucket with all the ironing.  No, I don't think all these shirts were worn by Mike just before he died.  I believe these are shirts I pulled off the hangers to give away and decided they were just too dirty. I washed them and set them aside for ironing.  I feel much better. Those shirts are there, we're always there, for me to give away, not for Mike to wear again. Ah!

I spent the late evening replacing the elastic in a pair of old silk pants. Let's see how they look at me tomorrow for church.

Judy stopped by to deliver some lentil soup and sweets.

I slept well and was up before the alarm went off.  In June, it was light at 5:30, but now, it is not so much.  Being close to ...
